George Russell Storms to Azerbaijan GP Pole as Antonelli Crashes Out in Qualifying

George Russell delivered a dominant performance to claim pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, leading the field by a commanding 0.837 seconds—this season’s largest qualifying margin. The Mercedes driver topped two of the three practice sessions and was fastest in every segment of qualifying, earning his fifth pole of the year and first since Austria.

Russell’s title rival and team-mate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, suffered a rare setback after crashing heavily at Turn 1 on his second Q1 push lap. The runaway championship leader damaged his car’s front-left suspension and was forced to retire from qualifying, leaving him stranded in 16th for Saturday’s race.

Charles Leclerc took second for Ferrari, while Oscar Piastri was third for McLaren, both unable to get close to Russell’s pace. Isack Hadjar impressed with fourth on his Red Bull return, followed by reigning world champion Lando Norris in fifth and Lewis Hamilton in sixth after providing a crucial tow for Leclerc.

Pierre Gasly secured seventh for Alpine, ahead of Max Verstappen whose final lap was disrupted by yellow flags caused by Norris’s off. Carlos Sainz put his Williams ninth with the team’s first Q3 appearance of the season, and Franco Colapinto completed the top 10 in his Alpine.

Further down, Ollie Bearman narrowly missed Q3 for Haas, while both Audis of Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg were eliminated in Q1. Fernando Alonso out-qualified two-time Baku winner Sergio Perez, who languished in 20th as Cadillac’s struggles continued. Lance Stroll and Valtteri Bottas rounded out the grid.

With Antonelli set for a fightback from 16th, all eyes will be on whether Russell can convert his searing pace into victory on race day.
